Since 2008, the English-language, common law DIFC Courts have become the jurisdiction of choice in the Middle East region and beyond, providing certainty for business – whether multi-nationals, SMEs, future start-ups, or individuals – through the development of a mature body of case law and the delivery of globally enforceable judgments.
In 2015, the DIFC Courts established an additional ancillary service in the form of the Wills Service Centre, a joint initiative of the Government of Dubai and the DIFC Courts that gives non-Muslims investing and living in the UAE the option to pass on their assets and/or appoint guardians for their children, in accordance with the instructions in their Will. Until this service was launched, without a recognised and enforceable will, a person’s assets would be divided according to the UAE’s sharia-based law, whether or not they are Muslim.
